Provisions in this regard are laid down in Section 82(1) of the Customs Act, 1969.
In the case of goods unloaded in a customs port or a land customs station or customs inland container depot, they may be kept for 30 days (from the date of unloading). In the case of goods unloaded at a customs airport, they may stay for 21 days (from the date of unloading). This period, however, may be extended by the appropriate officer.
If goods are not cleared after that period, they may be sold after issuing a notice to the owner.
